HIKE TO THE 7-COLOR MOUNTAIN FROM CUSCO
About this tour
Classic Rainbow Mountain Hike from Cusco: The 3.5 km Trek to Vinicunca at 5,200 m
Ready to earn one of the most iconic photos in South America β on your own two feet? The Classic Rainbow Mountain Hike from Cusco is the original, unfiltered route to Vinicunca β Peru's most viral peak. No ATVs, no shortcuts: just you, the trail, and the last climb before the striped ridge appears in front of you. It's the full-day, high-altitude adventure that thousands of travelers set their 3 AM alarms for β and every one of them will tell you it's worth it.
Wake Up Early β Hotel Pickup at 4:00 AM
The day starts before dawn. We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 AM, hop into the van, and let you keep sleeping while we drive about 2 hours toward the highlands. No meeting points, no walking in the dark β just show up, roll out. Set your alarm and pack the night before.
Breakfast Stop in Cusipata
Around 6:00 AM, we stop in the mountain town of Cusipata for a hearty Andean breakfast: coca tea, coffee, eggs, bread, and fruit. Real fuel before the altitude. If you're vegetarian, let us know at booking and the kitchen will prepare an option for you.
The Original 3.5 km Trail to Vinicunca
By 7:30 AM, we arrive at the trailhead β already at 4,600 meters. Your bilingual Andean guide briefs the group, everyone layers up, and we start climbing. The classic trail is 3.5 km each way, taking about 2 hours to ascend at a deliberately slow pace.
The path isn't technical β it's wide, no scrambling, no drops. What makes it demanding is the air: at 4,600 m, each breath delivers roughly half the oxygen you're used to. But that's also the reward. You'll climb through open puna grasslands, past herds of alpacas, llamas, and vicuΓ±as, with the massive glaciated peak of Ausangate growing on the horizon in front of you.
Not up for the whole climb? Horses are available on the trail from local families (~70β90 soles per leg, paid directly to the owner) β a smart option for kids, older travelers, or anyone struggling with the altitude.
At the Summit β 5,200 Meters of Payoff
Around 10:00 AM, the last stretch of trail opens up onto the ridge itself. The striped mountain is right in front of you, and the massive glacier of Ausangate sits across the valley. You've got 30β60 minutes at the top to catch your breath, take the photo you came for, and let your guide explain the geology of the color bands β iron reds, sulfur yellows, copper greens, clay whites and lavenders, all formed over millions of years and only exposed since ~2015 when the glaciers melted back.
Layers matter here. Even in full sun, the summit hovers near freezing, and the wind on the ridge is constant.
Descent and Buffet Lunch
By 11:00 AM, we start the descent β about an hour down with the whole landscape in front of you. The easy part you earned.
At 1:00 PM, we're back in Cusipata for a hot buffet lunch of traditional Peruvian dishes. You'll want seconds. Trust us.
Return to Cusco
We roll back into Cusco around 4:30 PM β tired in the good way, full of stories, and probably starving again by dinner.

Frequently asked questions
- How difficult is the classic hike?
It's not the trail that makes it hard β it's the altitude. The path is wide and non-technical, no scrambling or drop-offs. But you'll be above 4,600 m the entire time, with roughly half the oxygen you're used to. Distance is 3.5 km each way (about 6 km round trip), 1.5β2 hours up. Your guide sets a deliberately slow pace, and horses are available if you need a break.
- What if I can't make it to the top?
No problem β this happens to plenty of travelers and there's no pressure. Horses are available all along the trail, so you can ride part or all of it. If you feel unwell, your guide has oxygen and can escort you back down safely. Your safety comes first.
- How is this different from the ATV tour options?
The classic hike is the original 3.5 km trek on foot β no ATVs, no shortcuts. It's the "earned" version for travelers who are acclimatized and physically fit. ATV options take you much closer to the summit with less walking, and there's even a driven-to-viewpoint version with no ATV. If you're not sure the classic hike is right for you, we can recommend the best alternative.
- Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes β essential. Cusco sits at 3,399 m and Vinicunca peaks at 5,200 m. Spend at least 1β2 days in Cusco before this tour. Drink lots of water, avoid alcohol the night before, and consider coca tea or altitude pills if you're sensitive. Going from sea level straight to 5,200 m is how altitude sickness happens.
- Is the entrance fee included?
No β the Rainbow Mountain entrance fee is paid in cash on-site in Peruvian soles. We'll confirm the exact amount at booking so there are no surprises.
- Can I rent a horse on the trail?
Yes! Horses are available all along the trail from local families β about 70β90 soles per leg, paid directly to the horse owner. Great option for kids, older travelers, or anyone who needs a break. You can hire one for the ascent, the descent, or both.
