2-Days Acatenango 4×4 Off Road Group Adventure from Antigua Guatemala
About this tour
Acatenango 4x4 Tour – Volcano Adventure Without the Hike
Witness the power of an erupting volcano without the exhausting 5-6 hour hike.
This Acatenango 4x4 tour is perfect for all types of travelers—young explorers, seniors, plus-size adventurers, or anyone with knee or lower limb issues. No previous hiking experience needed.
Acatenango 4x4 Experience
Your journey starts in Antigua Guatemala, where we meet at Tanque La Unión (meeting point may change due to local festivities). You’ll ride in one of our fully-equipped 4x4 off-road vehicles directly from Antigua Guatemala.
First, we’ll stop at our office in San Miguel Las Dueñas to store any extra luggage and gear up with warm clothing (included). Optional rentals like hiking boots, backpacks, trekking poles, and more are also available.
From there, the adventure begins with a scenic off-road ride to Finca San Sebastián. After registering with a passport photo, we’ll drive for about 1 hour up to 3,400 meters above sea level. Expect bumps, side-to-side movements, and epic views on the way.
At the parking area, you’ll enjoy a short and easy 40-minute walk to basecamp—no steep trails or uphill climbing. As you approach, you may already hear or see the Volcán de Fuego erupting in the distance.
Acatenango 4x4 Basecamp
You’ll be assigned a cozy cabin and enjoy hot drinks, stunning panoramic views, and fresh mountain air. From here you can see:
- Volcán de Fuego erupting right in front of you
- Volcán de Agua in the distance
- The breathtaking highlands of Guatemala
- Magical sunsets and crisp starry skies
Optional Add-Ons
At 4:00 PM, you can choose to join a guided Fuego Ridge hike to get even closer to the eruption zone (extra cost, operated by local guides). This hike takes about 1.5 hours each way and offers jaw-dropping views.
The Next Morning
You can also opt for a free sunrise hike to the Acatenango summit (2 hours, steep and challenging). After sunrise, you’ll return to basecamp for breakfast before heading back down in the 4x4 vehicle.
Around 10:00 AM, we arrive back in Antigua and drop you off with memories to last a lifetime.

Traveler reviews4.3/5 (6 reviews)
It would be preferable for it to be disclosed that booking with this company is actually booking with Mayan. We specifically didn't book with Mayan due to some concerning reviews we saw from other women on their tripadvisor page, so not finding out we were with them until we were already in the 4x4 was pretty disheartening. We had a very bad experience with a Mayan employee at the location where you check in and get your lunch. One of our group members asked an employee a question and was subseqently berated for multiple minutes, despite her asking him numerous times to leave her alone and to please stop talking to her. The tour guides themselves (Walter and his crew) were 10/10, so if this review were only about them it would be 5 stars. They were super friendly and helpful, but at the end of the day we had zero intention of booking with Mayan and weren't pleased with the lack of transparency.
Nice day but good is really bad and the guides are young and underious. Too bad when you pay a LOT of money
