ROSTRO MAYA/INDIAN NOSE HIKE
About this tour
Indian Nose Sunrise Hike: The Best View of Lake Atitlán
Ready for the most unforgettable morning of your trip? The Rostro Maya sunrise hike — also known as the Indian Nose hike — takes you to the single best sunrise viewpoint at Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. While the rest of the world sleeps, you'll climb a sacred Maya mountain and watch the sky explode into color over the lake and its volcanoes. Trust us: it's worth every minute of that early alarm.
Why the Indian Nose Hike Is a Must-Do at Lake Atitlán
Locals call this peak the Rostro Maya — the "Mayan Face" — because its ridge looks like a person lying down, gazing at the sky. For the Tz'utujil Maya communities, it's sacred ground still used for ceremonies today. For you, it's a front-row seat to one of the most beautiful sunrises on Earth. From the summit you'll see a full 360-degree panorama of Lake Atitlán, the towering San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán volcanoes, and colorful villages dotting the shoreline. On clear mornings you can even spot distant Acatenango, Agua, and Fuego — and with luck, Volcán de Fuego erupting against the dawn.

Sunrise at the Summit ☀️
Reaching the top, around 2,200 meters high, is where the magic happens. The sky becomes a living canvas, blazing pinks, golds, and oranges spilling across the horizon as the sun rises behind the volcanic chain. To make it perfect, we'll hand you a steaming cup of hot chocolate or coffee, grown right here in the Atitlán highlands, to sip as the light show unfolds. It's the ultimate moment for photos, videos, and memories you'll carry forever.
After soaking it all in, we begin a relaxed 20-minute descent to our waiting transport, which carries you back to San Pedro La Laguna/San Juan La Laguna.

Frequently asked questions
- How difficult is the hike?
It's rated moderate. The trail is uphill and steep in a few sections, but it only takes about 45 minutes and is manageable for most people with basic fitness. You go at your own pace, and your guide is there to support you the whole way.
- What happens if it's cloudy or rainy?
The tour runs in most weather conditions, and the summit atmosphere is unforgettable regardless. A perfect sunrise can't be guaranteed since nature decides — some mornings are crystal-clear, others misty — but the dry season (November–April) offers the clearest skies.
- Is this tour suitable for kids or older travelers?
Yes, as long as they're comfortable with a short uphill walk in the dark and an early start. Children should be accompanied by an adult. If you have mobility concerns, feel free to message us beforehand so we can advise you.
- Do I need a guide, or can I hike it alone?
We strongly recommend going with our local guide. The trail is poorly marked and crosses private community land that requires permission. Our guides know the correct, approved route and keep the experience safe and smooth.
- What should I wear and bring?
Warm layers (it's genuinely cold before sunrise), comfortable closed or hiking shoes, a headlamp or flashlight, a bottle of water, and your camera. That's all you need for an amazing morning!
